Kpwet had eleven brothers. They all lived in Leseper together with Kpwet's wife, Rovilgal.

Kpwet avait onze frères. Ils vivaient tous à Leseper, avec également l'épouse de Kpwet, Rovilgal.

One day, as they were all together, Kpwet's brothers said to him: "Let's go and make canoes! – OK", said Kpwet.

Un jour qu'ils se trouvaient tous là, les frères de Kpwet lui dirent: "Allons nous tailler des pirogues!" Kpwet dit: "D'accord."

And off they went to make canoes; all but Kpwet, who preferred to lie in his dwelling.

They finished their task and returned home. There they found Kpwet quietly resting in his dwelling.

"Hey, Kpwet! what are you doing? We've all been canoe-carving! – Everything's fine", Kpwet answered.

"Eh, Kpwet! qu'est-ce que tu fais là? nous, nous sommes allés tailler nos pirogues!" "Oui, oui, tout va bien", répondit Kpwet.

The next day they went back to the same place. They had chosen a variety of woods, such as nettle-trees, Sterculiae or other trees, all of which were unsuitable for canoe-carving.

Le lendemain, ils retournèrent au même endroit. Ils avaient choisi divers bois, qui du salat, qui du qer, ou autres arbres quelconques, tous impropres à tailler une pirogue.

As soon as their boats were finished, they tied them together and dragged them down to the beach, to Tetgen.

Puis, lorsque leurs embarcations furent achevées, ils les attachèrent ensemble, et les descendirent jusqu'à la plage, à Tetgen.

They announced to Kpwet: "Our canoes are finished. We've already brought them down to the shore. – Yes, yes, all's well", replied Kpwet.

Ils déclarèrent à Kpwet: "Pour nous, nos pirogues sont terminées. Nous les avons déjà descendues sur le rivage." "Oui, oui, tout va bien", répondit Kpwet.

One of them dragged his boat into the water, climbed in - and down it sank into the sea!

L'un d'entre eux tire alors son bateau sur l'eau, grimpe dedans - et voit sa pirogue sombrer dans la mer!

The others all experienced the same disappointment.

The next day, Kpwet wondered how best to carve his own canoe. He set off for Sêrêwan.

Once he had reached Sêrêwan, he found a Rosewood tree standing just in front of him. "That's what I'll use to make my canoe", he said to himself.

Arrivé à Sêrêwan, il trouve un padouk, dressé là devant lui. "C'est dans ce padouk que je taillerai ma pirogue", se dit-il.

And so he felled the tree, trimmed it and squared it - and off he went back home to Leseper.

À coups de hache, il finit par abattre l'arbre à terre, puis se met à l'écimer. Enfin s'en retourne chez lui, à Leseper.

The next day he returned to Sêrêwan. Once he got there, he looked up and, to his surprise, the Rosewood stood erect, back in its original position!

Le lendemain, il s'y rend à nouveau. Arrivé à Sêrêwan, il lève la tête, et surprise: le padouk est à nouveau debout, à sa place!

"Hey! How come this tree is standing there?" he exclaimed, "I'm sure that was the one I cut down yesterday!"

"Eh! comment se fait-il que ce padouk se retrouve debout?" s'exclama-t-il, "c'est pourtant bien celui-là que j'ai abattu hier!"

Again he felled the tree, trimmed it and squared it - and off he went to Leseper.

Il l'abat de nouveau à terre, l'écime et l'équarrit - puis s'en retourne à Leseper.

The next day he returned to Sêrêwan. Once more he found the Rosewood tree standing there in its place! For the third time he felled it to the ground, trimmed it and squared it.

Le lendemain, il se rend de nouveau à Sêrêwan. Une fois de plus, il retrouve le padouk debout, à sa place! Alors, pour la troisième fois, il l'abat à terre, le taille et l'équarrit.

Then he began to hollow it out. As soon as he had finished hollowing it out, he picked up a piece and ran off to hide.

Puis il commence à l'évider. Quand il finit de l'évider, il en saisit un morceau, et court se cacher.

While he was crouching, he looked up and soon saw an enormous spider slowly creeping up.

Tapi de la sorte, il lève les yeux, et bientôt aperçoit qui s'approche, lentement, à pas feutrés, une immense araignée.

"Hmm", he thought. "This is no doubt the cause of all my woes."

"Tiens", pensa-t-il. "C'est sans doute elle qui me fait ces misères."

Still hiding, he observed the Spider as it drew near; and saw it pick up, one by one, the canoe wood shavings, all the pieces that Kpwet had carved out of the wood.

Toujours caché, il observe l'Araignée qui avance toujours; et la voit qui ramasse, un par un, les copeaux de la pirogue, tous les morceaux que Kpwet vient de tailler dans le bois.

And the spider began to refill the canoe relentlessly... But just as it was about to place the final piece, it looked all around, but found no trace of the missing piece.

La voici qui se met à reboucher la pirogue, à la reboucher sans relâche… Mais au moment de poser le dernier morceau, elle regarde autour d'elle: pas de trace du morceau manquant!

As the spider was searching everywhere, Kpwet leapt out from his hiding place, brandishing his axe.

Elle cherche ici et là, fouille un peu partout, et voit soudain Kpwet qui surgit de sa cachette, brandissant sa hache.

"Ho, ho! so it was you who did that to me! I'm going to cut you to pieces!"

"Hé hé! c'est donc toi qui m'as fait ça! je vais te couper en morceaux!"

"For pity's sake, my friend", the Spider cried, "don't do that, don't kill me! I'll make you a canoe. Trust me: go home to Leseper and wait for me there. When I've finished my work, and when it's ready, I'll let you know and you can come and see your canoe. – OK" said Kpwet.

"Pitié, compagnon", s'écria l'Araignée, "n'en fais rien, ne me tue pas! Je te taillerai ta pirogue. Fais-moi confiance: rentre à Leseper, et attends-moi là-bas. Lorsque j'aurai terminé mon travail, et que tout sera prêt, je te le ferai savoir, et tu pourras venir voir ta pirogue." "C'est bon", dit Kpwet.

As he returned to Leseper, the Spider began to carve the canoe.

Tandis qu'il remonte à Leseper, l'Araignée se met à sculpter sa pirogue.

The spider chopped, cut, carved the whole thing, including the outrigger; and lo and behold, the canoe was finished.

Once it was firmly fastened, the spider sent word to Kpwet: his canoe was ready.

Upon his return, he discovered the boat. "Oh, that's great!" he exclaimed.

Kpwet took a long look at his boat, then returned straight back to Leseper, to ask his wife: "Weave a sail for my canoe."

As soon as the sail was woven, Kpwet took it to Serewan. About to attach it to the boat, he realized it was too small, and threw it away disdainfully. The discarded sail immediately petrified.

La voile une fois tressée, Kpwet l'emporte à Sêrêwan. Il veut l'installer sur le bateau, mais s'aperçoit qu'elle est trop petite, et la rejette avec dédain. Rejette la voile, qui se pétrifie.

Kpwet returned home and repeated his request to his wife. She wove a new sail, much bigger this time. As soon as it was woven, Kpwet took it to Serewan. He fixed it to the boat and exclaimed: "This time it's perfect".

Kpwet rentre à la maison, et répète sa demande à sa femme. Elle en tresse alors une nouvelle, bien plus grande. La voile une fois tressée, Kpwet l'emporte à Sêrêwan. Il l'installe sur le bateau, et s'exclame: "Cette fois-ci, c'est parfait."

At that point, he implored the rain to pour.

Alors, il fit tomber la pluie.

A heavy, torrential, unrelenting rain. The water rushed away and swept Kpwet's canoe down to the shore.

Une pluie diluvienne, immense, interminable. L'eau s'écoule en torrent, et emporte ainsi avec elle la pirogue de Kpwet en aval, jusqu'au rivage.

This torrent is now the river Rangrangkor.

Ce torrent, c'est aujourd'hui la rivière Rangrangkor.

Then there were two men. The first was black, the other albinos.

Puis ce sont deux hommes. Le premier est noir, l'autre est albinos.

Kpwet asked the black man: "Do you want to work on my boat? – No, not really", he answered.

Kpwet demande au noir: "Tu veux travailler sur mon bateau?" "Non, ça ne me dit rien.", répond-il.

Kpwet turned to the white man: "Do you want to work on my boat? – OK", he said.

And so the white man climbed into the boat...

Both he and Kpwet hoist the sail and took out to sea. The boat glided on the water, gliding, gliding as far as Nus-ngerekpwo.

There Kpwet picked up a conch and blew into it: "Woong, woong, woong!"

Kpwet's brothers, who had remained in Leseper, heard the sound of the conch.

They ran down the mountain to the shore at Tetgen, looked to the east and what did they see? There was Kpwet, gently sailing towards them in his canoe - a huge canoe.

Kpwet came closer and closer, and finally came ashore at Tetgen. He pulled down the sail, climbed up the slope, dragging his canoe behind him. Finally they all set off home to the village of Leseper.

Kpwet s'approche, s'approche, pour finalement accoster au rivage de Tetgen. Il redescend la voile, puis gravit la pente, en tirant derrière lui sa pirogue. Enfin ils rentrent tous au village, à Leseper.

The eleven brothers then felt their growing anger against Kpwet!

Les onze frères sentent maintenant monter leur colère contre Kpwet!

They decided on a plot against him. "How can we steal Kpwet's boat?"

Ils décident ensemble d'un complot contre lui. "Comment allons-nous faire pour nous emparer du bateau de Kpwet?"

"Tomorrow we'll go to the forest and set up nutmeg birdtraps. When the traps are ready, we'll set up Kpwet's trap as far away as possible. – Alright!"

"Demain, allons en forêt, installer les muscades pour les pièges à oiseaux. Quand les pièges seront prêts, celui de Kpwet, nous irons l'installer le plus loin possible. – D'accord!"

The next day they put their plan into action.

Le lendemain, ils mettent en route leur plan.

They prepared the birdtraps, then returned home. In the morning they said to Kpwet: "Hey, Kpwet, how about going birdhunting? – OK", he said.

Ils préparèrent les pièges à oiseaux, puis revinrent à la maison. Le matin, ils dirent à Kpwet: "Dis donc, Kpwet, si on allait à la chasse aux oiseaux? – D'accord", dit-il.

And so they set out. But they had spread the word: "If you go off to reach your hunting ground, don't linger, you must get back to the village immediately."

Ils se mirent donc en route. Mais ils s'étaient bien passé le mot: "Si tu pars pour gagner ton poste de chasse, ne traîne pas, tu dois rentrer au village sans attendre."

They followed their plan. "But where's my hunting spot?" Kpwet asked. "Your spot?" they answered "it's way over there."

Ils suivirent donc le plan qu'ils s'étaient fixés. "Mais où donc est mon poste?", demanda Kpwet. "Ton poste?", répondirent-ils, "il est là-haut, tout là-haut."

Kpwet set off and found his spot. He climbed up to attach the strings; then he climbed down to hide at the foot of the tree and wait for the game.

Kpwet se mit donc en route, et trouva son poste. Il l'escalada pour fixer toutes les ficelles; puis descendit se cacher au pied de l'arbre, pour attendre le gibier.

Meanwhile, his brothers had returned to the village and had seized his wife and his bananas. Then they went down to the shore, taking with them Kpwet's canoe, as well as his wife Rovilgal.

Pendant ce temps-là, ses frères étaient retournés au village, et s'étaient emparés de son épouse et de ses bananes. Puis ils étaient descendus vers le rivage, emportant dans leur fuite la pirogue de Kpwet, ses bananes, ainsi que son épouse Rovilgal.

Kpwet sat for a long while before he finally caught a bird. At that point the sound of a song came to his ears.

Kpwet heard the song and thought: "Goodness! I bet that's my brothers who are fleeing away with my wife and my canoe!"

And so he set off back home. On arriving at the village, his mother cried out: "Kpwet! Where were you? Your brothers came and took away your wife, your canoe, and your bananas! They fled to Gaua."

Alors il se met en route, et retourne chez lui. Arrivé au village, il entend sa mère qui s'écrie: "Kpwet! D'où viens-tu donc? Tes frères sont venus enlever ta femme, ta pirogue, et tes bananes! Ils ont pris la fuite pour Gaua."

"Really? – Of course!", she exclaimed. "Well, well."

"Vraiment? – Mais bien sûr", s'exclama-t-elle. "Bon, bon."

Kpwet went off to find a coconut, a totally empty shell.

Kpwet alla chercher une noix de coco, une noix complètement vide.

He brought it over and said to his mother: "Come with me to the shore at Tetgen. I'll climb into this coconut with the few bananas I have left. You catch the nut and count the waves. At three, one two three, throw me as far as you can."

She picked up the coconut in which Kpwet had crawled. She then counted the waves: "One, two, three!"

As the third wave rolled, his mother threw Kpwet as far as she could, across the water.

And away he floated, drifting far, far, far away, so far that he finally drew near his brothers in their canoe. He even overtook them slightly, and as he was close to them, very close – he broke wind.

The eleven brothers very soon smelt the fart. "Aagh! Hey, fellers! What's that awful smell?"

Then one of Kpwet's brothers, Smart Companion, began to speak. "Where do you think this smell comes from? But of course, it's Kpwet who just farted!"

"Hey there", they interrupted, "how come you talk about Kpwet? You know very well he's way over in Vanua Lava, like an idiot! He's no doubt still up in his tree!"

"Hé là", l'interrompirent-ils, "que viens-tu là nous parler de Kpwet? Tu sais bien qu'en ce moment il est encore là-bas à Vanua Lava, comme un idiot! Si ça se trouve, il est même encore dans son arbre!"

A little while later, they were still sailing on the waves when they caught sight of something like a banana skin just like those they had left their brother: the smallest of the bunch.

As they sailed on, the banana skin drew nearer.

"Quoi encore?", s'indignèrent-ils. "Mais qu'est-ce que tu nous parles encore de lui? Tu sais bien qu'il est encore à Vanua Lava, là-bas, à taquiner les oiseaux comme un idiot!"

"Ok, ok. We'll see."

"Bon, bon. On va bien voir ce qu'on va voir."

Kpwet continued his journey as far as Gaua.

Kpwet continuait lui-même son voyage, jusqu'au moment où il aborda Gaua.

He went ashore and ran and hid inside a pandanus. With a flower in his hair and his axe in his hand, he sat down to watch his brothers and their canoe draw near.

Il accosta au rivage, et courut se cacher dans un pandanus. Une fleur dans les cheveux et sa hache à la main, il s'assit pour voir venir la pirogue et ses frères.

As for them, they sailed so quickly that they soon arrived close to the shore.

De leur côté, ils naviguèrent tant et si bien, qu'ils finirent eux aussi par s'approcher du rivage.

As they looked up towards the island, they suddenly caught sight of Kpwet jumping down from the pandanus and pacing up and down the sandy shore.

Levant les yeux vers l'île, ils aperçurent soudain Kpwet descendre d'un bond de son pandanus, et arpenter le sable, sur le rivage.

His wife exclaimed: "Hey, boys! That looks like Kpwet up there walking along the shore!

Son épouse s'exclama: "Eh, les gars! On dirait bien que c'est Kpwet, là-haut, qui se promène sur le rivage!"

"What?" they answered. "But what makes you keep talking about Kpwet? Kpwet's not here; he's far away in Vanua Lava! Anyway, how could he have got here?"

"Quoi?", répondirent-ils. "Mais qu'est-ce que tu lui veux donc, à Kpwet, à encore parler de lui? Mais il n'est pas là, Kpwet; il est là-bas, tout là-bas, à Vanua Lava! Et puis d'abord, comment aurait-il bien pu arriver jusqu'ici?"

"Okay, okay", she admitted. "Let's go over to that island."

"Bon, bon", admit-elle. "Allons-y donc, sur cette île."

They paddled on with renewed vigour, until the canoe entered the channel.

Ils pagayèrent donc de plus belle, jusqu'à ce que la pirogue s'engageât sur le rivage.

As they were coming ashore, Kpwet went down to the water's edge, his axe in one hand, and a flower on his head.

Tandis qu'ils montaient ainsi, Kpwet descendait vers la côte, sa hache dans la main et sa fleur sur la tête.

Once he was in front of the boat's prow, he began to sing:

Suddenly he brandished his axe and let it fall violently on to the front of the canoe, smashing it in two right down the middle, from bow to stern.

They stood there, speechless.

They remained idle on the shore, until Kpwet declared: "Now it's your turn to find a way back to Vanua Lava. Otherwise we'll all stay in Gaua."

As Kpwet was standing in front of the pigs, Wokpwastavav saw him and shouted: "Hey there, my friend, how are you?"

"Fine," Kpwet answered, "I'm fine; but I'm not alone, my brothers are still down on the beach."

Wokpwastavav told him: "Go down and see them and tell them to come up here and spend the night."

Kpwet went back down to the shore and called his brothers, who in turn went up to the village.

Wokpwastavav fed them; after dinner they spent the evening together, and then Wokpwastavav suggested: "Would you like to sleep in the big house? – Sure."

Wokpwastavav went home to sleep and left them among themselves.

They soon felt sleepy. With a flick of the finger, Kpwet cracked open a timber pillar and they all walked in to hide and sleep.

While they were asleep, Wokpwastavav came into the room in the middle of the night. Finding no one, he went back home.

The next morning, when they woke up, Wokpwastavav came to visit them while they were eating breakfast.

"Listen, last night I came here to talk, but you weren't here. Where did you go?" he asked.

Then one of Kpwet's brothers, Simpleminded Companion, answered: "It's quite simple, you know: with a flick of a finger, Kpwet cracked this pillar open and we slept inside."

"Really? – Yes, really. – Alright! I see."

They remained another full day. The same thing happened that evening: when they wanted to sleep, Kpwet flicked aside another post.

That evening, Wokpwastavav came to visit them. Finding no one, he looked for them everywhere, but in vain, then returned home.

The next morning he came back, and found them all sitting together.

Simpleminded Companion answered: "We were sleeping in a post again, in this one! Kpwet opened it with the tip of his fingers."

Compagnon L'esprit-lent répondit: "Mais enfin! Nous avons encore une fois dormi dans un poteau, dans celui-ci! C'est Kpwet qui l'a ouvert du bout des doigts."

The last day, Kpwet opened a beam, and in they rushed to spend the night.

Le dernier jour, Kpwet fit s'ouvrir une poutre. Ils s'y engouffrèrent tous, pour y passer la nuit.

The next morning Wokpwastavav came back to see them, asked the same question, and Simpleminded Companion answered: "We slept in the beam."

Le lendemain matin, Wokpwastavav revient les voir, leur repose la question, et Compagnon L'esprit-lent lui rétorque: "Eh bien, nous avons dormi dans la poutre."

"Oh? Alright, I see."

"Ah bon? Bon, bon, très bien."

Later, while they were all talking peacefully, Kpwet announced to Wokpwastavav: "The day after tomorrow we'll go back home."

Plus tard, tandis qu'ils discutent tous tranquillement, Kpwet déclare à Wokpwastavav: "Après-demain, nous allons rentrer chez nous."

"Very well, but first I'd like us to make a big meal for everyone.

They all followed Kpwet's instructions to the letter.

They prepared eleven more bamboos: one full of piss, another full of black ants, yet another full of red ants, and so on.

Ils préparèrent en outre onze autre bambous: l'un plein de pisse, un autre plein de fourmis noires, un autre encore rempli de fourmis rouges, etc.

All this corresponded exactly to Kpwet's orders. When they had finished their work, they went to bed.

The next morning, they began to remove the food from the oven. Once they had finished, they began to scrape coconuts.

While Kpwet was scraping his, Wokpwastavav asked: "Who wants to go and fetch some seawater?"

He went down to the sea, broke his bamboo and climbed up the ironwood tree.

They all followed suit, right to the very last of the eleven brothers - including Rovilgal, Kpwet's wife.

In fact they had all climbed up the tree, holding their second bamboo in one hand, as I already explained: some full of black ants, others full of piss, others of red ants.

At that moment, Wokpwastavav understood that they had all made fun of him, and was full of rage.

The ironwood tree began to grow, grow, grow, as tall as from here to the horizon.

But Wokpwastavav went on climbing until he caught hold of Kpwet's foot. Kpwet shouted out: "Give me a bamboo of piss!"

As they climbed, Kpwet cried out: "Ironwood, my tree! Grow like you've never grown before!"

And so they all climbed down one after the other, as well as Rovilgal and finally Kpwet himself.

As soon as Kpwet had jumped down, he seized the top of the tree and shouted to Wokpwastavav: "Hey, you up there! You wanted to devour us, didn't you? But your last day has come, today you're going to die!"

"Ton jour est arrivé!", répondit Kpwet.

Just then Kpwet let go of the top of the great ironwood tree, and it suddenly stood up straight, causing Wokpwastavav to fly away. He flew away into the clouds before falling down and down relentlessly.

Alors Kpwet relâcha la cime du grand bois-de-fer, qui en se redressant brusquement fit s'envoler Wokpwastavav. Il s'envola jusque dans les nuages, avant de retomber à nouveau dans une chute interminable.

He kept on falling until he touched the ground over there in Lesis, and as he reached the soil, he expired.

He became a rock, and that rock exists to this very day.

And so Kpwet climbed up the mountain and planted ironwood trees. These trees are still standing up there to this day. If you want, you can go east to Lesis. You'll see a forest of ironwood trees there: it was Kpwet who planted them.
