Once upon a time there was a man who had a big canoe.

Il était une fois un homme qui avait une grande pirogue.

(Nowadays we use the bislama word 'kenu', but we used to call it 'ak soso')

(De nos jours, nous disons 'kenu'; mais autrefois, on appelait cela 'pirogue')

He dragged his canoe down to the coast, and began to paddle towards the deep sea... Beforehand, he had grilled a few wild yams and placed them inside his snare, the one we call ‘keepnet’ -- a snare for sea fishing.

Il traîna sa pirogue pour prendre la mer… Auparavant, il avait grillé quelques ignames sauvages [de forêt], qu'il avait ensuite placées dans son piège, celui que nous appelons ‘nasse’ -- piège [pour la pêche] en mer.

He carved himself a stick in the shape of a gaff, tied a rope around it and carried it off to sea. He took it out to sea, whilst observing the trees (on the water surface).

Il se tailla un bâton en forme de gaffe, y attacha une corde, et l'emporta avec lui en mer. Il l'emporta en mer, tout en observant les arbres (à la surface de l'eau).

After a while, he thought: "This tree here looks just right for immersing my keepnet."

Au bout d'un certain temps, il se dit: "Bon, l'arbre que voici semble bien convenir pour y immerger ma nasse."

He gently plunged his keepnet into the water until it touched the bottom, then returned home.

Immergeant donc sa nasse, il la descendit doucement jusqu'à ce qu'elle atteignît le fond, puis il s'en retourna.

He waited at home, and after five days, he thought "Maybe it's the right time now."

Il attendit chez lui, et au bout de cinq jours, il se dit: "Bon, c'est peut-être le bon moment maintenant."

So off he went, taking with him a coconut and a shell out to sea .

Il repartit donc, avec une noix de coco et un coquillage, qu'il emporta en mer.

On reaching the right spot, he began to grate the coconut over the surface of the water: the sea immediately became calm and the water limpid; he looked down and saw his keepnet was still there.

Arrivé au bon endroit, il se mit à râper la noix de coco au-dessus de la surface: aussitôt la mer devint calme et l'eau limpide; il regarda au fond, et aperçut sa nasse qui se trouvait là.

He tied a small stone to his gaff and gently lowered it down onto the seabed. Once he had hooked his keepnet, he began to pull on it.

Après avoir attaché une petite pierre à sa gaffe, il la descendit doucement jusqu'au fond. Lorsqu'il eut accroché sa nasse, il se mit à tirer.

He pulled it right up to the surface of the water and saw that it was full of fish!

Il la tira ainsi jusqu'à la surface, et vit qu'elle était remplie de poissons!

He put it into his canoe, and started off home.

Il la posa dans sa pirogue, et prit le chemin du retour.

He paddled all the way to the shore, (got out) to tow his canoe; but when he tried to tow it, it was far too heavy!

Il pagaya jusqu'à atteindre la plage, puis (descendit pour) haler sa pirogue; mais lorsqu'il voulut la haler, elle était beaucoup trop lourde!

At that moment he caught sight of two children playing on the beach.

C'est alors qu'il aperçut deux enfants qui jouaient sur la plage.

They were playing at carefully lining up burao flower petals (on the sand).

Ils s'amusaient à aligner soigneusement des pétales de fleur [de burao] sur le sable.

They made themselves a cone (out of a leaf) in which they delicately placed the flower pistils.

Ils se fabriquaient un cône (en feuille); puis tout délicatement, ils y inséraient le pistil de ces fleurs.

And they placed the cone on the (petals). [??]

Enfin ils posaient le tout sur (les pétales). [??]

When they saw the trouble the fisherman had with his canoe, they ran over to him and asked him: "What's happening?" ~ "No, nothing", he answered; "just that I was trying to tow my boat on my way back home, and I just could not do it!"

Lorsqu'il virent les difficultés que le pêcheur rencontrait avec sa pirogue, ils accoururent, et lui demandèrent: "Qu'est-ce qui t'arrive?" ~ "Rien de particulier", répondit-il, "c'est juste que j'étais venu rechercher ma nasse pour la rapporter à la maison, mais au moment de vouloir haler mon bateau, impossible!"

He pulled on the rope a little, then stopped, exhausted.

Il tira sur la corde un instant, mais s'arrêta, épuisé.

They told him: "Don't worry, we'll help you." ~ "Oh yeah", he replied, "how can you help me?! I can't do it myself, and I'm much bigger than you!" ~ "Don't worry. We'll just try and help you, let's say, and if we don't succeed, then you'll have to manage on your own. Come on, stand up in the middle."

Ils lui dirent: "Ne t'inquiète pas, nous allons t'aider." ~ "Hé hé", répondit-il, "comment pourriez-vous m'aider?! Moi-même je n'y parviens pas, alors que je suis bien plus grand!" ~ "Ne t'inquiète pas. Disons qu'on va juste essayer de t'aider, et si jamais nous n'y arrivons pas, eh bien ce sera à toi de te débrouiller. Allez, mets-toi debout au milieu."

He went and stood up on the boom in the middle of the boat.

Il alla se mettre debout sur le bois, au milieu du bateau.

One of them stood at the bow, the other at the stern.

L'un se plaça à la proue, l'autre à la poupe.

Our man was so surprised when he saw them pick the boat up without effort and run off with it hastily!

Quelle ne fut pas la surprise de notre homme, lorsqu'il les vit soulever l'embarcation d'un seul coup, et l'emporter en courant à toute allure!

Back on dry land, they put the boat down.

Une fois arrivés au sec, ils posèrent le bateau.

Astonished by this scene, the fisherman turned away speechless.

Stupéfait par ce spectacle, le pêcheur s'en retourna sans même dire un mot.

He took all the fish with him and shared them among the village people and his family.

Il prit avec lui tous les poissons, qu'il alla distribuer au village, auprès de sa famille.

Once he had finished distributing the fish, he had hardly anything left, since he lived all alone.

Une fois qu'il avait distribué ainsi les poissons, il ne lui restait plus grand' chose, car il vivait tout seul.

Back at his home, he had merely a few pieces of grilled fish to eat...

Rentré chez lui, il n'avait guère que quelques grillades à se mettre sous la dent…

He soon had to go back to the forest to pick wild yams. When he finished roasting them, he filled his keepnet with them once more; he pushed his canoe down to sea and went aboard.

Bientôt il dut repartir en forêt, pour y cueillir des ignames sauvages. Lorsqu'elles furent cuites, il en remplit de nouveau sa nasse; puis poussant sa pirogue en mer, il embarqua de nouveau.

He paddled a little while, then he immersed his keepnet at the exact spot where he had dropped it the first time.

Il pagaya un moment, puis il immergea sa nasse là même où il l'avait immergée auparavant.

He waited five days before boarding his canoe again.

Il attendit cinq jours avant de reprendre sa pirogue.

At a particular moment he began to grate a coconut once again and, as it touched the surface, the water became limpid; as soon as he found the keepnet, he pushed his gaff out into the deep.

À un certain moment, il se mit à râper de nouveau une noix de coco, laquelle en touchant la surface rendit l'eau limpide; dès qu'il retrouva sa nasse, il enfonça de nouveau sa gaffe dans les flots.

He pushed it down as far as the keepnet, hooked on to it and dragged it all the way back to the shore.

Il la descendit ainsi jusqu'à accrocher sa nasse, qu'il traîna avec lui sur le chemin du retour.

He approached the shore ~ but when he tried to tow his boat, again it was impossible.

Il s'approcha de la rive ~ mais lorsqu'à nouveau il voulut haler son bateau, cela lui fut impossible.

At that moment, the two friends ran towards him once again.

Sur ces entrefaites, les deux amis accoururent à nouveau.

They ran towards him and said: "Do you want our help?" ~ "How can you help me?" he cried, "you're far too small! And my canoe is enormous!"

Ils accoururent et dirent: "Tu veux notre aide?" ~ "Comment pourriez-vous m'aider?", s'écria-t-il, "vous êtes beaucoup trop petits! C'est que ma pirogue est immense!"

"That's alright, no problem. We'll only try, and if it's too heavy, then we'll go away and you'll just tow it alone. Come on, go and stand in the middle."

"Non, non, pas de problème. Nous essayons simplement, et si elle est trop lourde, eh bien nous nous en irons, et ce sera à toi de la traîner tout seul. Allez, va donc te mettre au milieu."

He set himself in the middle of the boat, whilst one was at the bow, the other at the stern; and all of a sudden they picked the whole thing up and ran off with it!

Il se mit donc au milieu du bateau, tandis que l'un se plaçait à la proue, l'autre à la poupe; et voilà que, d'un seul coup d'un seul, ils soulèvent l'engin et l'emportent au pas de course!

They ran with the boat and put it down on dry ground. At this point he asked them: "By the way, where do you live?" ~ "Not far away, in fact we live here." ~ "But where's your house?" ~ "Our house? It's over there. If you want to see it one day, you can come. Just walk straight ahead in that direction and it's there in a tiny cave ~ a very small cave. Well, that's our house."

Ils courent donc avec le bateau et vont le poser au sec. C'est alors qu'il leur demande: "Au fait, où habitez-vous?" ~ "Pas loin ~ dirent-ils ~ en fait, c'est ici qu'on habite." ~ "Mais votre maison, elle est où?" ~ "Notre maison? Elle est là-bas. Un de ces jours, si tu as envie de la voir, tu n'as qu'à venir. Suffit de marcher dans cette direction, tout droit, et c'est là, dans une petite grotte ~ une grotte minuscule, tu vois? Eh bien c'est là, c'est notre maison."

They were about to take leave of each other when they added a last word: "We forbid you to talk about us. Both of us are ready to assist you. You're all alone, you have no children; so we're the ones who can help you. If ever you're in trouble, we can come and offer you assistance."

Ils allaient s'en retourner chacun de son côté, lorsqu'ils ajoutèrent un dernier mot: "Nous t'interdisons de dire quoi que ce soit sur nous. Tels que tu nous vois, c'est nous qui te porterons secours. Toi tu es tout seul, tu n'as pas d'enfants; c'est donc nous deux qui te porterons secours. Si un jour il t'arrive un problème, nous pourrons te venir en aide."

Weeks went by. One day, (our man) had a secret affair with a woman ~ but unfortunately, she was a married woman.

Les semaines passèrent. Un jour, (notre homme) eut une aventure secrète avec une femme ~ le seul ennui, c'est qu'il s'agissait d'une femme mariée.

They met regularly in secret until one day their affair was uncovered.

Ils se voyaient en secret régulièrement, jusqu'au moment où l'affaire apparut au grand jour.

His secret was revealed to all around, and this marked the beginning of his troubles. Very soon everyone knew about it.

Son secret fut révélé auprès des gens, et ce fut le début des ennuis. Très vite, tout le monde était au courant.

People said: "Let him carry on like that, anyway he's on his own. We'll just have to keep an eye on him; if he continues to act like that, we can always kill him!"

Les gens se disaient: "Il peut bien se comporter de la sorte, de toute façon, il est tout seul. Nous n'avons qu'à garder un œil sur lui; s'il continue avec ces agissements, il ne nous restera plus qu'à le tuer!"

They gathered round, holding their bows and arrows; when everyone was present they said (to one of them): "You go first. You try and shoot him in his home."

Ils se rassemblèrent, leurs arcs à la main; quand tous furent enfin réunis, ils dirent (à l'un d'entre eux): "C'est à toi que revient, en premier, la mission d'essayer de le tuer chez lui."

It so happens that the door in this house was made of a simple plaited mat. When they arrived, they began to surround the house; our man, lying in his bedroom, had sensed the heavy atmosphere of their presence.

Or, dans cette maison, la porte n'était constituée que d'une simple natte tressée. À leur arrivée, ils se mirent à cerner la maison; de son côté, allongé dans sa chambre, il avait déjà ressenti leur lourde présence.

He was startled as he saw a man draw aside the mat in his doorway and aim his bow ready to shoot.

Il sursauta lorsqu'il aperçut un homme soulever la natte qui lui servait de porte, bander son arc, et se tenir prêt à tirer.

This man had already seized an arrow made of human bone, and placed it on the bow string.

Déjà, celui-ci avait saisi une flèche en os humain, et l'avait placée sur la corde.

He stretched the bow as far as possible and shot the arrow ~ but suddenly our two pixies intercepted the arrow in mid air!

Lorsqu'il eut bien tendu son arc, il décocha ~ mais voilà soudain que les deux farfadets interceptèrent la flèche en plein vol!

The arrow didn't have time to reach him.

La flèche en question n'eut même pas le temps de l'atteindre.

When the archer saw his arrow break in the air, he wondered: "Hey, whatever's happening?!".

L'archer, lui, avait vu sa flèche se briser d'un coup dans les airs. "Que se passe-t-il donc?!" se demanda-t-il.

Once more he seized one of his arrows and prepared to shoot in the same way.

Une seconde fois, il saisit une de ses flèches et se prépara à la décocher de la même manière.

But the same thing happened to every single one of his arrows, right to the very last! They finally said: "Let's burn him!"

Mais chaque flèche, jusqu'à la dernière, connaissait exactement le même sort que la première! Ils finirent par se dire: "On n'a qu'à le brûler vif!"

One of them ran to fetch a brand from the village house, came back, and began to blow on the eaves, setting fire to the house.

L'un d'eux courut chercher un tison dans la maison commune, qu'il rapporta aussitôt; puis il se mit à souffler dessus, juste sous le rebord du toit de feuilles… En un instant, la maison avait pris feu.

They all ran around (the house), saying to each other: "Keep on running in circles: once the fire reaches him, we'll see in which direction he tries to escape and we'll just shoot him!"

Ils couraient tout autour (de la maison), en se passant le mot: "Continuons à courir en rond: lorsque le feu s'attaquera à lui, nous verrons de quel côté il essaye de s'enfuir, et il ne nous restera plus qu'à lui tirer dessus!"

The fire continued to devour his house: it had already destroyed the roof, and was attacking every object, with flames becoming stronger and stronger!

Le feu continuait de dévorer la maison: il avait déjà emporté toute la toiture, il s'attaquait à tous les objets, ses flammes étaient de plus en plus intenses!

Once the fire had at last died out, they were astonished to see our man was still lying on his bed, and the bed had been spared by the flames!

Lorsque le feu finit par s'éteindre, quelle ne fut pas leur surprise de voir notre homme toujours allongé dans son lit, et de constater que ce même lit avait été épargné par les flammes!

The fire had burnt the house all around, but only cinders had fallen on the bed; the flames had spared the bed.

Le feu avait consumé la maison tout autour, mais seules les cendres avaient pu retomber sur le lit; les flammes, quant à elles, l'avaient épargné.

His mat was simply lying there, over his bed of leaves...

Sa natte était tout simplement étendue là, sur son sommier de feuilles…

"What can we do?" they wondered, and went back home.

"Que pouvons-nous faire?" se demandèrent-ils, et ils s'en retournèrent chez eux.

Another village had heard of what had occurred, and decided to go and lend a hand.

Or, un autre village avait appris ce qui leur était arrivé, et décida d'aller leur prêter main-forte.

They all set off together to help the first village that had risen up against the man.

Ils se rassemblèrent pour venir en aide, à leur tour, au village qui s'était le premier levé contre (notre homme).

But just as they prepared to come and fight, our two creatures started slaying them all!

Mais alors qu'ils s'apprêtaient à venir le frapper, voilà que nos deux créatures se mirent à tous les massacrer!

They began by slaying the first village, those who had started picking a quarrel with him, those whose arrows had all been broken one after the other and had gone on to set his house on fire.

Ils massacrèrent d'abord le premier village, ceux qui avaient commencé à lui chercher noise, ceux-là mêmes dont toutes les flèches avaient été brisées les unes après les autres, et qui avaient ensuite mis le feu à sa maison.

But after having killed those people, they also decimated the second village to have taken part in the fighting.

Mais après avoir massacré ceux-là, ils décimèrent également ceux du second village, qui n'étaient intervenu qu'après.

And so our man, seeing this, thought "That's bad; what I'm doing is really bad. I must put an end to this."

Alors notre homme, voyant cela, se dit "Ce n'est pas bien, ce que je suis en train de faire ce n'est pas bien du tout. Il faut y mettre fin."

When everyone had gone, he addressed the two Pixies, saying: "You have both helped me enough until now, but I think that's enough. You helped me tow my canoe, you helped me by preventing arrows from reaching me, by stopping the fire from burning me, you even decimated two whole villages! I'm grateful to you, but you must stop now. They'll kill me one day or another."

Lorsque tout le monde fut parti, il s'adressa aux deux Farfadets, et leur dit: "Tous les deux, vous m'avez suffisamment aidé jusqu'à présent, mais je pense que cela suffit désormais. Vous m'aidez pour haler ma pirogue, vous m'avez aidé en empêchant les flèches de m'atteindre, en empêchant le feu de me brûler, vous avez même décimé deux villages entiers! Je vous remercie, mais il faut arrêter maintenant. Un jour ou l'autre, ils finiront par me tuer."

The next day he went (to the village) and declared: "Listen! You who've been trying to lynch me, you failed because of two creatures who've been helping me, two Pixies."

Le lendemain, il se rendit (au village), et déclara: "Écoutez! Vous qui tentez de me lyncher, vous n'y êtes pas parvenus à cause de deux créatures qui me venaient en secours, deux Farfadets."

They immediately asked: "But where do they live?" ~ "They live over there; if you want to see them, we can go together, I'll show you their house."

Ils demandèrent aussitôt: "Mais où habitent-ils?" ~ "Ils vivent là-bas; si vous désirez les voir, nous pouvons y aller ensemble, je vous montrerai leur maison."

They all set off towards the beach; he then revealed their home, a crevice in the rock.

Ils se mirent tous en chemin en direction de la plage; puis il révéla leur maison, une anfractuosité dans la roche.

They went off to fetch pandanus leaves and other dry leaves to tie around bundles of dead wood, and light a fire through the mouth of the cave.

Ils allèrent chercher des feuilles de pandanus et autres feuilles sèches, afin d'attacher des fagots de bois mort, et allumer un feu à travers l'entrée de la grotte.

The fire grew and grew so strongly that it completely burnt their home. The two pixies had no opening through which to escape.

Le feu grandit, grandit, grandit, tant et si bien qu'il consuma entièrement leur demeure. Les deux farfadets n'avaient aucune ouverture qui leur permît de s'échapper.

They both perished inside at the same time. Immediately after that, the people assaulted the man and lynched him by stamping him to death.

Ils périrent tous deux à l'intérieur, en même temps; quant à l'homme, les gens se jetèrent sur lui pour le tuer, pour le lyncher.

Two people seized him violently and slung him to the ground in front of the village house. Another man appeared ~ the one who first caused the conflict: he fell on him and again kicked him to death.

Deux personnes l'empoignèrent violemment et le projetèrent au sol, devant la maison commune. Arriva ensuite un autre homme, celui-là même par qui le conflit était venu: il se jeta sur lui et le roua de coups de pieds, jusqu'à ce que mort s'ensuive.

And this, I believe, is how the legend of the Pixies ends.

Voilà, c'est ainsi que se termine le conte des Farfadets.

We hear about these Pixies like little creatures who every morning play with flower petals ~ we all know ~ by carefully lining them up on the sand. Well, it's their story I've just told you.

Ces Farfadets, nous en entendons parler comme de petites créatures, qui chaque matin ~ nous le savons tous ~ alignent soigneusement des pétales de fleur; eh bien c'est leur histoire que je viens de vous raconter.
